So I pitched what I thought was a really fun and immersive idea to improve vehicle realism in the city, but it kind of got dismissed. I get it, devs are busy and have to prioritize. But I still think it deserves a second look because it’s not just about a mechanic, it’s about creating deeper interaction and roleplay.
Here’s the idea:
Basically, every vehicle gets an oil change counter. Every time you do an oil change, the counter goes up. Once it hits a certain number — like 3, or 5 (depends on the vehicle type or how much it’s driven), the engine is considered worn out.
When that happens:
- You have to go to a mechanic to get the engine replaced.
- (Optional) You can go to a tuner to upgrade or improve the new engine.
- If you ignore it? Your vehicle starts breaking down, running worse, or maybe just dies on you.
Why this would be awesome:
- (Realistic Maintenance) Regular oil changes actually matter, realism to how we take care of our vehicles.
- (Increased Roleplay) Steady demand for mechanic services and provide more opportunities for tuners to shine.
- (Dynamic Economy) Whole new economy around engine parts, repairs, and upgrades.
- (Engaging Scenarios) Roadside breakdowns, engine inspections, and even a black market for used engines!
- (Vehicle Progression) Give our vehicles a sense of longevity and progression.
Basically, it would make our vehicles feel more like real machines that need regular care.
What I Heard Back: Project OP-FW
One of the devs basically said: "This feels overly complicated. Oil changes are rare and wouldn’t really boost mechanic traffic. There’s already enough roadside RP from crashes. Plus, this would be a lot of work for something barely used."
But Here's My Take:
I understand the potential concerns about development time and adding complexity. However:
- he oil change mechanic is already in place; this feature simply expands its functionality.
- The engine wear threshold can be set generously to avoid overly punitive gameplay.
- This is about fostering meaningful vehicle ownership and sustained interaction, not just creating more service calls.
- It enhances the mechanic and tuner roles by creating organic demand, not just emergency repairs.
- For vehicle enthusiasts, this adds depth; for others, it remains a largely unobtrusive feature.
Final Thoughts:
I just wanted to share this publicly in case others thought it could be cool too. It’s a small change that could bring some big RP moments. And, I think we could strike a good balance between realism and fun, without making car ownership a chore.
Anyway, maybe one day this gets a second look!
